Our friends from Foster City Rotary, Laura called after we landed, checking in with us to coordinate our activities for the rest of the day. Laura, her husband Don, and their dog TC recently moved back to Big Island (two weeks) ago after 7-8 yrs in Bay Area. Trying to re-retire! Yes, the last time they moved to Big Island was to retire, that didn't happen, here they are trying it again.
As we stepped out of the small airport, two very friendly people with lei greeted us "Aloha". SURPRISE! We wouldn't expect Laura & Don there. I've the very fragrant yellow plumeria & orchid lei, while Curtis has the 100% orchid
Renting car from Hertz was a breeze, as Curtis is a gold card member. Jump in our car, here we go, follow Laura & Don's very new car to their place. It's not far from King Kamehameha hotel we stayed last time.
Parked our car, off we went for late lunch at Fish Hopper. Icy cold beer in hand, we had our yummy food. Mine, mac nuts crusted fish; Curtis, fish tacos (hum, or vice versa).
After lunch, our chauffeur Laura picked us up to visit Blue Sky Coffee. Ah, the very wonderful Kona coffee. The shop keeper gave us a tour of the garden. We saw white pineapples, (according to Laura, sweeter than regular pineapples, and without the acidity that sting/bite our tongue), ornamental pineapples, calabash (looks like a giant round Hawaii avocado), cocoa pods, and not to be missed - coffee cherries.
In the middle of the tour, I got LOTS of bites from bugs, extremely itchy, which distracted me from paying attention to the guide. Definitely reminded me of the "little black bugs" in Taiwan. My, now I know why there's a bottle of bug spray by the shop........Suntan lotion & Bug spray are necessities in Hawaii!
Picked up our car, stopped by Kona Brewer, strongly referred by Laura for its famous "beer yeast dough" pizza
Back to Manago, our favorite hotel (to eat) from our family's last trip here. This time, we're staying here, upper level, the only Japanese suite, ta-ta-mi style, with priceless view overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Life is good :-) Couldn't believe we were just at CA this morning!
Went in for the famous porkchop in the restaurant. Even at 8pm, still lots of people waiting.....this place is doing great business. Love the hospitality and really delicious food. The boys would surely love to savor the porkchop!
