On to the backwaters via a leisurely drive and several nice stops - Church, waterfall, rubber plantation - to a joke restaurant with an absolute double for Manuel - finally as threatened by Lonely Planet the menu was only some sort of list of what they may have once had..
The Keralan Backwaters are below sea level and involve a series of canals enclosing paddy fields - quite enchanting. The conventional way to do this is on a rice barge/house boat but on these there is literally nothing to do. Instead we stayed at a super homestay (Green Palms) - actually virtually the best house we saw in Kerala and in our terms a bed and breakfast. They took us out on canoes to the local 'toddy' pub - this is made from the coconut palm flower and smells horrid and is lethal. Luckily the smell keeps you off it. Entertained to local traditional boating songs on the way back.
Next morning we did a nice long walk around the canals via the Tea stall and eventually got mobbed as we ran into many children walking to school across the 'dykes'.
A boat back to Alleppy and we all piled on the local bus (bags and all) back to Kochi. Now once again I'll tell you - don't sit near the front where you can see what the kamikazi driver is up to - overtake everything, everywhere and then look at your watch. Locals found us very strange.
