So on we go to Monteverde; its really just over that hidden volcano but the road takes us around the big lake arenal and the last 30k on dirt roads. Still we get a relatively real hotel only just outside town. actually its like being in Wales, its at the top of a big hill and every now and again the cloud comes down, but unlike Wales it has hot tubs. We have a nice walk around one of the reserves & Liz proves she can now do shortish walks OK. The 15 minute slog into Santa Elena produces a supermarket that delivers on Lizīs sudden craving for pate & bread plus the Costa Rican hat pin. Next day wandering around (in the dry) yields an Ok butterfly farm, lots of birds and the stunning Hummingbird Gallery cafe at the Park entrance which has about 20 feeders & a permanent 50+ humming birds all for the price of a hot chocolate & yummy apple pie. Lizīs camera goes into overtime. Day wrapped up by evening visit to frog īfarmī- so we get to see those famous litle green jobs with the blue eyes. This place is a gem and we had to ourselves - worth the walk & we managed to get a taxi back. So a nice place - almost totally touristy but Santa Elena has travelers & all the US bus tours seemed to be in one big hotel out of the way. Costa Rica has clearly sold its soul to US bus tours and charges them appropriately - shame they pay so easily for overpriced tours & cant use their initiative to get places on their own.
As we leave the cloud really does descend!
