After we first arrived in 2009 we settled back into daily life pretty quickly, recreated our daily lives in the UK in a city with more sun, less traffic and a relaxed attitude. We got jobs made friends and used as a base to explore. As a condition of our visa we were required to live and work for at least two years in South Australia, I got work in printing, Sharon got work in aged care, it was pretty scary how quickly it all happened, we fitted in well and never got home sick because it just felt like home.
While we were here we saved and eventually found a vehicle to use as our camper van. In the three years we have had the truck we have been to Tasmania, Melbourne, Uluru, Loads of National Parks in South Australia, Kangaroo Island and a month in New Zealand, we have made the most of the opportunity!
But the more we traveled the more we wanted to see, with only four weeks a year in holidays its simply impossible to see all of Australia, which is understandably why lots of 'grey nomads' on retirement sell up get the caravan and head off round the country.
Because we had the van and always had travel in the back of our mind we never settled down completely, we didn't buy a house and submit totally to suburban life. What we did end up doing for two years after house sharing was house sitting, a fantastic way off living in all areas over Adelaide, meeting lots of interesting people living rent free and looking after cool pets. People at work thought we were obviously mad moving house practically every week, and probably amazed we could hold down our jobs, but it was training for our lives on the road, we had no regrets it was perfect living out off a van/bag is defiantly in our comfort zone now
So anyway, thats our brief background in South Australia, we are now permeant residents and can become proper Australians very soon, if they don't change there minds now we are unemployed! Our plan is to explore as much as we can for the next few years before we head further afield, but its only a loose plan so we will see.
Back to Adelaide summary, here it goes then three years in one paragraph. Highlights, generous open people, beautiful country town style city centre, Kangaroo island, perfect all year Mediterranean climate, coffin bay, flinders ranges, west beach fish and chip pack, coopers beer, central markets, Adelaide hills, wine regions, mad march festivals and the people, did I mention the people?!
Down side always feeling like a fraud, enjoying a homely reception that we knew would only be temporary, thank you all for the memories…
