With a plan to try and fly out of Bali to Sydney 1 day early, we headed off to Sanur, near the airport but more of an upmarket beach resort in oppose to Kuta. We set off to find Quantas in the straining midday heat only to be told that the service had been reduced and flights now only operate 3 times a week with the next date being when we were booked for. The only relief was the air conditioning in the office but there is only so many times you can ask the same question to remain cool. So, back out into the sun for us and the arduous task of finding accom, quite easy really and we landed a not so special room, in the fact it had not been decorated since the 70's but the saving grace was our direct sea view from the balcony.

Sanur was nice I have to say, with a real mixture ranging from luxury boutique low rise hotels to obviously the first, seen its heyday, high rise property with peeling paint but still popular for packages and with an air of faded decadence. Restaurants lined the street ranging from zesty Italian to minimalist chic. Whatever your wish, Sanur catered to it.

Ready for our flight, we headed to the airport, with the thought of possibly overstaying our visa in the back of our minds. After check-in we preceeded to the departure lounge, through customs and then we were hit with it. Excuse me but you are 1 day over on your visa. With that, we were ushered into the customs room with stern or was it ignorant, customs officials hanging around. Eventually, we were shown into another room where they demanded $20 each for overstaying. We explained, time and time again, that if you work by the 24hr clock as we arrived in so late, then it really is 7 days. More and more people were sent to see us but still nothing was being resolved, pay or suffer the consequences. As neither of us fancied being placed in a Balinese jail, we coughed up the dough and before Tilly handed it to the rude, irate customs clerk, she told him that it was the last time we were ever to visit Bali. As if he was bothered! As we exited, the room was crammed full of people in the same position, a long night ahead boys as Tilly smiled!
