Girl on bus: "where are you going to?"
Brian: "1770"
Girl: "sorry?"
Brian: "you know, back in time"
Girl:"eh, ok"
Not many people know about the town of 1770. It's on the coast in the middle of a massive national park. It only got a road 2 years ago. And it's absolutely brilliant. it's become very popular with rich people so every year the locals rent out their houses for a few weeks at Christmas and camp on the beach.
We stayed in Cool Bananas - possibly the best hostel in all of Australia
For a place in the middle of nowhere there is loads to do. One afternoon we all went on the Scooteroos Tour - about 20 people on scooters chugging around the place. It tour was run by some crazy bogans and in true bogan style included a beer break to watch the sunset (5 beer limit apparently). The scenery is amazing and we're not too sure why Captain Cook didn't stick around for longer when he sailed by in 1770.
Myself and Brian went on a boat trip out to Lady Musgrave Island which is at the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef. It was a bit pricey but well worth it. The island is made of bits of broken coral and is surrounded by a lagoon. We snorkled and dived with loads of turtles and colourful fish (I am terrible at remembering the names of the pretty things). Sinead, Josie and Ferg opted to spend the day drinking beer on the beach.
The final State of Origin match between NSW and Queensland was on in the loccal pub on of the nights. We were warned to be up for Queensland. Most of the locals had mullets, flip flops and missing teeth. And then Queensland were thrashed so they weren't very happy.
The next morning we went on a free 4 wheel drive tour of the area given by the local conspiracy theorist. He showed us some of the local flora and fauna and told us the world will end in 2012. Then he gave all the girls free facials and sold us some mud packs.

. Greg, the owner, was the soundest aussi bloke we have met in 7 months. He'd be up at 6am watering the plants and still up at 11pm cleaning the kitchen. The hostel had fresh flowers every day in the bathrooms (presumably picked by Greg at some stage in the day). We could've chilled out here for a very long time. For a place in the middle of nowhere there is loads to do.
