Me and Brian were the only people staying in the ancient Coliseum Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. We were probably the first people to stay there in a long, long time. In our three nights at the Coliseum the only other living creature we saw in the hotel was the cat. We think it was in charge of cleaning. Not that we could complain - the queues for the shower and toilet weren't bad. Room number 3 comes equiped with fan, sink, blaring Indian music and the sound of back-firing motorbikes. Nice. If it wasn't for the horrific jet lag we wouldn't have got any sleep. Although if it wasn't for the horrific jet lag we might have changed hotels.
Downstairs in the bar and restuarant it was a different story. Best sizzling steaks and cheapest beers in KL. The Coliseum is a relic from colonial days in KL with creamy brown walls that can only be achieved through decades of neglect and cigar smoke. Although why they needed twice as many staff as customers was beyond me.
When we weren't enjoying the food and beers we pottered around KL. Unfortunately we forgot about the monsoon, or the monsoon forgot to stay on the east coast of Malaysia. It lashed rained every day. During the short bursts of sun-shine KL is good fun - we had breakfast in China town, lunch in little India and dinner at the breaking fast ramadan buffet in a fancy hotel. Lots of walking around street markets and staring up at the amazing KL Tower and Petronas Twin Towers. And a nice old man in a camera shop fixed my camera for free.
