Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston, Washington, named after the famous explorers of 1803 expedition. Where the confluence of two rivers Clearwater and Snake merge to form the mighty snake before it winds its way through southeastern Washington ( my home turf) to merge with the Columbia River.

It's also the lower end of Hells canyon. Which is why they call it Hells gate. You can take a jet boat up the river on a long days ride to see Hell's Canyon or you can drive 75 miles to White Bird Idaho to get a better jet boat ride. That is what we will do but that is different post.

Check out the amazing basalt formation in the photos. It was a 2 mile hike up the snake river to see this amazing formation which is as amazing as the Devil's Post pile in Mammoth. Swirling hexagonal tubes of basalt.

We had originally planned to stay a week here but the road noise across the river was getting to us so we decided to head upriver.  The good news is that we did catch up on several weeks of laundry and restock the larder on essentials.
