Scenes from the 2nd day of work: [11.2.2009]
In peace being & serious kicking ass rehearsal
The day began with online work at the Nordic House again. Going through yesterdays photos and writing down yesterdays events and thoughts. To remember in more detail.
I was to hang out with Eddie. Took the bus downtown, this time I anticipated a quicker route and got off the bus before the whole involuntary cruise through the whole Tóshavn. The local traffic here is for free. My navigating skills plus a map helped me to find my destination: Eddie's place at the moment on Landavegur. A bit of a vagabond, like me, described Orphy Eddie the other day. Not permanent addresses. Eddie is living with a guy called Rani. He has a drum kit in the living room, which also operates as Eddie's office during the days. There he does what he does for SIC and all the other issues around the band: getting funding for the tours, negotiating new contract/record deal with the Faroese record label Tutl etc. etc.
This is where he sits the days through, by his laptop, telly in the background. His mobile rings occasionally and he speaks Faroese, which I do not understand much. The language has a beauty in its intonation, a language of poets/singers as Icelandic. A bit of a romanticism there, but it sure feels and sounds like it. The more the less one understands ;)
I see a serious dedication. In all the guys. I admire it and hope I will have a similar one towards my own artistic work.
The Faroese language was nearly extinct because of some imperialistic acts in the past, but Faroese people wanted to preserve it and acted upon it. The language seems to be an important part of a person's identity. To have an own language is imperative - a language of your inner thoughts and feelings.
Other issues we addressed where American cultural imperialism upon us poor Europeans, about Faroese media and film, about reality television and the strong wish to be famous, without effort or dedication... And of future plans of SIC - of course, more on those all a bit later.
19.30 we went to the rehearsal studio. And Gudmar came :D He was surprised to see me, and I was happy to meet him again. The rehearsal session became very intense and it lasted for hours, with some smoking/coffee breaks/fresh air breaks in between. It sure got hot in there, all of us working in our own way - they playing and me photographing. I became a part of it somehow, in this small square confined space some magic happened - ART :D I got many good shots, more crappy shots and a lot of good mood and feeling of belonging. Weird, but brilliant. Outside Tórshavn was dark and silent, it was snowing lightly. Like Xmas weather, Eddie described, when we were out for a smoke.
Gudmar took me home with his car and headed off to Góta, where he lives here on the Faroe Islands. A 70 km drive in a bit bad driving weather. Drive safely and have a good night's sleep. The night is like an womb right now, embracing lovingly... Good night Tórshavn. See you again in the morning. It was a very good day today.
