Stayed at Tranqilo backpackers hostel - fun place, friendly (and generous) people. In the evening, we drank some beer, heard some funny stories ( like the one about the guy who tried to buy pot from the tranvestite prostitutes across the street and ended up fighting to get his money back, doing pretty well until the weaker one sprayed his eyes with pepper spray). Had some nice converstations with Andres, a young tico who was staying at the hostel. He told us about his amazing experiences at Ostionial, on the Nicoya Peninsula where we are hoping to see the turtles laying their eggs. Went out in a group of 7 to the Roots reggae bar. Good music, kind of scarily efficient waiter
First impressions of Costa Rica: GREEN!! San Jose looks like crap in most neighborhoods, but has a certain charm. People look serious but are very friendly if you talk to them. The city is colorful and busting with activity, smells, cars everywhere. Ido says the prostitutes in the park looked amazing. Phoenix says that it won't be hard to learn Spanish, she's already using what she can.
This morning (August 2nd) we flew to Puerto Jimenez, the little town on the Osa Peninsula, where we will do our trek in Corcovado National Park. A good omen: while we were walking into town from the airstrip, we heard some bird noises, and Ido identified them as Scarlet Macaws (in Hebrew - Arot), we saw about 4 of them, flying overhead from tree to tree. One pair flew along as we walked into town. What amazing creatures! The pic is taking too long to upload, so we'll try to get it into the next entry, after our trek in Corcovado (along with lots of other wildlife pics, we hope).
For the next 4 days, we'll be trekking in Corcovado National Park and then a night at the deluxe honeymoon at El Remanso jungle lodge, on the beach. We're so excited to be here and can't believe this is only the beginning!
