Our stay in Kathmandu was fairly uneventful, mostly due to Maoist organized strikes and some really intense bacterial infections in our intestines. Yup, just when we´re supposed to be enjoying all this new found energy from biking at 4000+ meters every day for two weeks we both get sick from some bad Dal Bhaat (lentils with rice). We had one day of sightseeing in Kathmandu in it´s ¨normal¨ state (no strikes) then the city and my body seemed to shut down at the same time.

We were dumbstruck by the Thamel area - it is possibly the largest tourist/backpacker spectacle we have seen yet. I think Sarah, who is normally drawn to shiny things (much like a crow), was on overload after spending one too many nights in Tibetan truck stops. Of course our second full day in Kathmandu the majority of the city shut down, including most shops in Thamel. It didn´t much matter though since getting out of bed at this point caused extreme nausea. Bathroom time between Sarah and I was at a premium. This was not helping me gain any of the weight I had lost while biking.

So that was Kathmandu for me: lots and lots of bathroom time. We flew out five days after arriving to meet my parents in Istanbul. Luckily I was just starting to feel better by then since we had quite a flight schedule:
Kathmandu to Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi to Bahrain
Bahrain to Istanbul
I have to say Gulf Air made it quite bearable, even putting us up in a hotel in Bahrain for our 12 hour layover (the nicest hotel of the trip!). Ahh... the joys of travel...
