By mid morning we were on our way, driving through Jefferson County, around Discovery Bay and then around Olympic National Park on our journey south to the Oregon Pacific coast. We were surprised at the contrast in the road quality from the previous few days, smooth, flowing and a real pleasure for the driver - another great place for a biker. Much of the journey was through forested mountains and the local industry was clearly dominated with logging, which was being performed on a huge scale.
As we started to approach the coast and drove along the inlets and coves the industry changed to the Oyster harvesting, which was also being performed on a large scale - maybe scale is something we should get used to in the US
Eventually we crossed into Oregon, across the largest bridge we have ever seen.
Now we started to get a sense of the grandeur of the coastline. Although it was late in the afternoon, we held off selecting a campsite until we found a good spot and Cannon Beach turned out to be just that - wait until you see the pictures. We immediately set off on a stroll along the beach and walked straight up to a flock of wild Pelicans - another first for us. Then a stop of to try local Crab Cakes and Clam chowder to end the day. That night we settled and treated ourselves to watching a DVD.
