Wadi Ram is the real desert: sand and mountains. Stephen Jones, who arrived this week from England, my friends Mohammad and Fahdi, and I left Amman on Thursday evening and arrived by car in a small Bedouin town on the edge of the Wadi Ram in the wee hours of Friday morning. Mohammad and Fahdi began searching the town for a drive to take us by 4x4 truck to a remote location inside the desert. This process involved searching for lights on, shouting over fences, and when we located a driver, taking about 15 minutes to negotiate a price.

The driver drove us for about 30 minutes into the middle of the desert, only the moon guiding our way. We found a hill that overlooked a large region and began to set up camp as the driver left us. Steve was elected to start the fire with the wood we brought. The two Arabs began setting up the tent. I began organizing all the stuff we brought. Steve later cooked us a feast of fried fish on the campfire.

Before we went to sleep, Mohammad poured a circle of diesel fuel around our camp to keep out the spiders, scorpions, and snakes. Apparently they don't like the smell. Steve and I expressed only mild concern about the creatures that we may have trapped inside the circle. As it turns out, we saw neither insect nor reptile the whole trip.

Wadi Ram (pronounced Wah dee rum) is the most famous of deserts in Jordan; if you watch Lawrence of Arabia it is featured many times because of it's beauty. We woke up in the morning in the midst of breath taking beauty. Enjoy the pics.
