Crossing the border from Mexico to Belize and on to Belize City was like going back in time 20 years --- because the bus you take is an old American school bus. My first country in Central America wasn't what you would expect from a Central American country, but a lot more like a Caribbean Island. English was widely spoken, however, it was with a heavy Caribbean accent, which meant I could only understand 2/3 of what was being said. Reggae music was heard everywhere and the American dollar was the currency of choice.
I was in Belize city for only 1 evening and my impressions were the following: bars on the windows, gated fences around the houses, and potholes that were too many to count. I guess the taxi driver said it best when driving me to the casino for my evening entertainment, "Man look at these brand new beautiful condos and the crazy shit roads they have to drive down to get to them." I replied, "I hear you. They should take some of those tourist dollars and repave them." He just laughed and said, "Man those tourist dollars go straight in the Minister's pockets!"
Oh yeah, the casino --- free food, free drinks, and I won $400 playing blackjack. All in all a very good night in Belize City. Since there wasn't much to see, if anything, I decided it would be the only night I spent there. I figured if I stuck around I would just go back to the casino and probably lose it all back and more.
