Part 1 - Day 1
Jambo, which is Welcome in Swahili! I am sitting in an internet cafe in Zanzibar 10 days into my trip, but it's the first real opportunity I have had to write in my blog. I realized early on that opportunities to search the internet would be few and far between so I just started jotting down notes on paper so when I had the chance I wouldn't have to sit in front of the screen and compose.
Like I said I arrived in Nairobi 10 days ago and spent an uneventful night at the hotel. The hotel was like a compound surrounded by barbed wire fence and multiple security guards at the front gate. I guess with Nairobi's reputation as "Nairobbery" it is certainly understandable they take such precautions. I chose the hotel because it was where the tour departed from early the next morning and I wouldn't have to venture out too much into the unknown city.
Part 2 - Day 4
Just returned from Masai Mara Reserve (I know I'm skipping ahead) and decided to venture out into the city a little bit since it was still light outside and reasonably safe to walk. I walked a couple of kilometers from the hotel to the city center (sorry no pictures as I didn't want to carry my camera and label myself as a target). As I expected the city was unimpressive and backed up my feeling that you don't come to Africa to see the cities, but you come to see the countryside.
