Feliz de Ano or Happy New Year! I arrived in Uruguay a few days ago by taking the 1 hour hydrofoil across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires to Colonia. Colonia, which is properly named as it is said to be the best example of a colonial town in this part of South America. The town was quite small and easy for me to walk around in one afternoon (most people visit on a day trip from Buenos Aires) has both strong Spanish and Portugese influences. Since I covered the town the previous afternoon I got up earlythe next morning for the 2 1/2 hour bus ride to Montevideo.
When arriving in Montevideo the bus station was packed with people heading out of town on holiday. It was the 30th and I had bad feeling things around town were going to be closing down so I mad sure I got a ticket out for the 1st and then headed out to see what I could before things shut down until after the New Year.
I am currently sitting in the lobby of the Days Inn Montevideo catching up on my blog. I really haven't got much choice because the city has turned into a ghost town. Every place is closed and has been since early yesterday afternoon. I couldn't even get a bus out until 11:30 tonight as even the buses have stopped running. I checked out of the hotel at noon and was hoping to go see a movie or two to help kill some time, but even they are closed. At least I found 1 restaurant that was open (after 2 hours of walking around) so I am not dying of hunger. I really chose the wrong time to come to Montevideo, if there ever is a right time time?

I went around to a couple of places last night that were listed in the guide book as "happening and cool places". Unfortunately they were either closed or completely dead. "Come on, this is New Year's Eve!" After an hour or so searching around in vain for a place to hangout I gave up and went back to the hotel and raided the mini bar. Lesson learned ---DON'T COME TO MONTEVIDEO AROUND THE NEW YEAR!
