This would require me to find another operator on the other side of town. Somehow managing to communicate my wishes to a Portuguese-only-speaking man who had travelled on the same bus as me to Luanda and who was pottering around outside (as you do at 5am), he got me onto a city-run-around bus. There were people aboard who were also going to Lubango that day.
The day's journey was pretty uneventful. The roads were mostly very good, save for four to five hours near the end. On a particularly bad bit just as dusk was falling, we pulled up behind another bus which was stuck in the mud. A big lorry sorted that out.
And that was about it really. The scenery was marvellous at times; very mountainous is central Angola and beautiful coastline too.
We arrived at Lubango at around 10pm, 15 hours after leaving Luanda. These tortuously long journeys, often on appalling roads and in cramped vehicles, are difficult to tolerate one after the other. Especially when you’ve had such little and poor sleep as I’d had the previous two nights. But, I am now in Lubango, with two days left on my visa and only one more day of travel until I reach Namibia. Whether or not the border is still open by the time I get there tomorrow evening I frankly don’t care. So long as I’m there.
I have a bed to sleep in tonight. Mmm.
