8th July - Another windy bus journey, this time into sleepy Mae Sariang. Paid 150b (just over 2 quid) for a mattress on the floor but it did have mozzie screens etc and it was only a stop over. Had lunch and dinner at the local bus station as this seemed to be the only place with an english menu. We had to use our limited Thai even then but we had a nice meal - was this the cause of our problems for the next few days?

9th to 14th July - Back in Chiang Mai. Unfortunately we spent most of this in our room due to stomach problems. It's possible we've ended up with ameobic dysentry and therefore we've been given a hundredweight of pills to take as it can have other complications besides the obvious. Without going into the gorey details, we're not rushing to the bathroom all the time at all although for one evening we did fight over the toilet. We've been eating lots of rice soup (yum yum) and watching lots of telly but we managed to squeeze in some shopping at the night market too when we were a bit better.

It's also time for Buddhist Lent. In contrast to Songkran (New Year) we managed to stay dry for this festival, except for the rain. The celebration marks the start of the monks supposedly not being able to go to any other temples. They would ruin the rice fields walking through them in the monsoon and it's also harder for them to get around. The idea is also that buddhists remain dry from alcohol for all or part of the 3 months of lent but this usually only lasts for the first 3 days of the 4 day holiday.

On 13th we took the overnight train from Chiang Mai with our back packs the heaviest they have ever been - people were staring at our overlarge bags and I had to be helped through the train door! We arrived in Bangkok on 14th (obviously) and headed straight out again for Kanchanaburi after storing one of the bags as it's full of stuff to send home. The left luggage was 30 baht per day so we took it to Khao San Road and convinced a guest house to take it as we had stayed there before. They charged 45 baht per week so it worked out much better and we don't have to go back to the station just to collect our bag on the last day before we send everything home. Much lighter of baggage, we set off in a minibus for the bridge over the river Kwai.
