Today we planned to ride up Windy Ridge, the east side of Mt St Helens. The day started with a great ride up highway 503, a nice road that follows a winding river. For all you riders out there, river roads are the best. The road up Windy Ridge is excellent, lots of curves and good elevation changes, with nice views of the east side of the mountain and the surrounding forest. The damage on this side was as extensive as the volcano blast was directed west and north. The ride came to a premature end though and the road was blocked off after only 4 miles. Apparently the heavy snowfall completely washed the road away. Oh well - I did get a short video of the ride back down.

We carried on to Randle; this section of road was horrible - the pavement is very chewed up and bumpy - I left my seat more than once. This is where I parted company with Mike and Brigitte and struck east on my own. And where I found the heat...

The interior of Washington, much like BC, is very desert like, including the temperatures. My bike thermometer (in Fahrenheit) quickly registered 100F and stayed that way for over 6 hours! It was as my brain was baking while driving past Spokane, Washington, that I thought, "What if Washington and Idaho were to merge into a single state? Would they call is Washaho?" Hmm, sounds more like a charity event...

I stopped for the night in Sandpoint, Idaho - a resort town on a lake here in the Rockies. I'm staying in a severely overpriced Best Western but the bed is comfy and the view is spectacular.

Today's mileage: 808km
