It was my plan initially to launch an assault on one of the larger mountains near here today. However, I didn't pull up all that well after yesterdays warm-up walk! In the interest of not pushing to hard and potentially wrecking myself for future days seeing as we still have a couple of days left in our holiday, we decided to turn our hand to some Nordic walking today.
Nordic walking is essentially power walking, using what look like ski-poles to provide you with multiple points of contact with the ground; useful for those hilly or rough parts of the trail.
For our attempt at Nordic walking, we decided to forgo the poles. Neither of us would have the technique to make it look any good. The path we decided to travel was just under 13km in length. At the beginning part of our journey we were walking along beside the roadways; quite clear and easy going. This prompted Shellie to suggest that this Nordic walking seemed pretty easy.
About 5 minutes later we turned a corner and were presented with a reasonably steep climb, and it got harder from there! We climbed about 600 mtrs today over about 7km of hilly terrain; quite slippery in areas, rocky in others. We certainly have a greater appreciation of the use of the poles in Nordic walking to provide stability; as well as keeping the upper body in shape in preparation for cross-country skiing which Nordic walking is closely related.
Well, the exercise of the last two days should result in us sleeping well !
