Today was a drive to the Dolomites, the Italian side of the Alps. We decided to head for the Alps rather than Florence or Piza as you can read about history, but you experience the Alps! Well that is the excuse I'm going to stick to :)
For the drive we set Denise (the GPS) to avoid toll roads so our path would take us through the small towns. The route also provided a plethora of 50km/hr zones. The trip took us about 6 hours to travel 174kms. The hills are amazing, with cliff top castles dotting the landscape. We didn't think Italy was much for castles, but we were wrong. Or perhaps this is a reflection that much of this land used to be part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire and became part of Italy after WW I. The sides of the valleys were terraced to allow for the growing of Wine grapes, the dominant plant it appears in the region.
Tomorrow we head out for some Alpine walking. We plan on staying here for three nights before heading to Turin, then to Marseille to drop off Toddy (the car).
