Today we decided to explore the hills around Verona and Lake Garda. The hills are a mere 20 minute drive from the centre of Verona which reminded me of Canberra, with its close proximity to bushland.
The drive through the hills, OK, mountains, was very picturesque. One our travel we found a very steep and tight road curving its way up, climbing about 600 meters. The road would make a fantastic hill climb of a very scary billy cart hill!
We our way through the little towns which do the plateau. Wine vines were very common, as were fruit trees. They way they grow their vines here is a little different from what I remember of places like the Hunter Valley; they train the vines to grow in a T shape, the vines interconnecting to provide a canopy under which the grapes grow. While this must provide some protection from the elements for the grapes, it would mean harvesting could only be performed by hand. We were driving through the area in the middle of their Autumn harvest. Occasionally we found ourselves caught behind a tractor carrying a load of grapes to the crushing facility.
After exploring the hills we made our way to Garda. The lake was huge. We spent a few hours exploring the foreshore; some of the land holdings were very large as were many of the recreational boats; there must be old money here! Garda must be a very popular family tourist destination if the size of the caravan parks was anything to go by.
Tomorrow we head for the Dolomites to get some bush-walking in the Alps and to have a Sound Of Music moment.
