Today we went for a walk, which ended up being around 18km long :) We went searching for a little gorge located just out of Bled which was discovered in 1891; that is, relatively recently (if you consider the age of much of European civilisation).
Our walk took us along narrow winding roads in the areas behind the metropolis that is Bled (population: 5,000), seeing cattle complete with cow-bells, goats & sheep (with tails!); many a house with a cottage garden, apple trees, roadside berries etc. We also noted there was plenty of construction of new houses. The bricks they use here are quite cool; large, red, and made with a honeycomb between the surfaces to trap the air for insulation purposes.
Once we found the gorge, we walked along its 1,600m length. It was simply stunning, the water flowing along the watercourse as clear as the water we saw in Bled Lake. There was plenty of fish (probably trout). The air was cool, with the steady beat of the water working down the rapids adding to the calmness that was the gorge.
After traversing the gorge, we worked our way back, following a 7km road through the foothills, eventually finding our way back to Bled. It rained a little as we progressed; however we were sure to pack for most situations (it is an alpine area after-all) so we remained dry.We stopped for coffee and a bite of the local delicacy on the way back to the apartment; Kremne Rezine. Imagine a cake with a dense pastry base, a thick (1.5 inch) layer of custard (the light and fluffy type); a thick (1 inch) layer of lightly whipped cream, with a flakey-pastry topping dusted with icing sugar. Very yummy!Tomorrow we head for Verona, Italy. After the experience here with the apartment we have decided to try and secure an apartment first, hostel second. For Verona, an apartment it is. We are currently planning to be in Verona for 4 nights.
