The next morning, we got up early with the intent of returning to Arches for a hike and additional photography with the early morning light. Unfortunately, the clouds that had been dogging us since Colorado had other plans and we turned around and went back to the RV, leaving those tasks for another day. Instead, we decided to go into downtown Moab and look around. Moab is entirely dependent on tourism for its existence. While there is a salt mine near the town, Moab's original industry was uranium mining. I don't believe there is any mining going on in the area any more, the radioactive tailings from the original mining have created a real mess and there is a DOE facility here that is trying to figure out how to clean up.
In any case, downtown Moab is hodgepodge of restaurants, tourist gift shops, clothing stores, and shops selling Indian arts and crafts. We wandered in and out, had lunch, and then went home for an afternoon nap.
