We left Las Cruces early in the morning and began our trek north to Santa Fe. The GPS routed us through Las Cruces to I-25 and, as happens occasionally, it had a glitch in its road database. This one was fairly minor, telling us to turn right onto the interstate instead of the needed left, but getting across three lanes of traffic to make the required turn is always interesting. At least the folks in New Mexico are more courteous than the drivers in Florida! After making a brief stop at a Border Patrol check point, we headed on north across the desert. Again, I'm struck by how green the desert looks. I didn't think of summer as the rainy, wet part of the year.
I finally feel like we're in the west again. Tex/NewMex/Mex restaurants everywhere and a Trader Joe's! Ah, civilization. We've put up our tent (well put down our jacks at least) here in Santa Fe and we've climbed to 7000 feet. We came through Santa Fe on our trip last summer (2007) and really liked the town. We're going to spend a few days here to get better acquainted. We decided to go to Café Pasqual for dinner tonight since we'd had a great brunch there last year. What a mistake! While they seem to shine for breakfast and lunch, their dinner "chef" hasn't a clue. I posted a review on Tripadvisor so others won't have the same disappointing experience we had.
The summer monsoons continue to follow us. Everyone says it's unusual, but we've had rain(!) everyday we've been in New Mexico. I thought this was supposed to be a desert!
