Good Morning and Happy Montag everyone! I trust you all had a great Thanksgiving. We did too - not a traditional one mind you, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. I'll let Andee give you the details with one of her updates later, but for now, I wanted to address something that many of you have been asking about, but we haven't replied back until now. So, the question on everyone's mind is: "What's your apartment like"? Here's some pictures that will answer that:
We will start out with the Living Room.
This shot is taken from the Office doorway. It is a strangely-shaped room, and with the furniture that it came with, doesn't make for the most comfortable of setups to watch TV or relax in.
Next, we have the aforementioned office.
Somehow, there is now also a green couch in here that folds out into a smallish bed. How it got in there is anyone's guess. On the left, you can barely see the mirrors along the wall behind the desk chair. This entire wall is a closet, with four sliding doors and full-length mirrors on each.
This next shot shows the Dining Room table.
You can see the entry to the office on the left, and the edge of the couch on the right. Standing in the same position as the picture on the left, but turning slightly to your left gives you the view of the kitchen.
Don't blink, or you'll miss it. Note the 'Kitchen Table' inside. I think it used to be a sewing machine table. This is also known as our 'Pantry', our 'Laundry Room', 'Furnace Room' and if either of us gets the other one mad: 'Solitary Confinement'. 30 minutes in the hole and you'll be begging to be let out.
The previous two pictures were taken from what we call "The Entryway". If you back up two steps from where they were taken, you get this view:
This room is next to the kitchen. It's actually decorated in a style similar to our main bath at home. It's a bit crowded if we are both in there at once, but with all the mirrors scattered throughout the rest of the place, one of us can go somewhere else to primp. If you stand in this doorway and look out, you look into the bedroom.
Four floor-to-ceiling closets, not shown, line the left hand wall in here. There is also a really cool orange lamp between the closets and the windows. It gives the red lamp in our bedroom at home a run for its money. If you look closely at the window, you can kind of make out some chairs. They are on the Terrace.
This is a very cool place to hang out and smoke a cigar and was actually the deal-closer when we decided to take this apartment. Now, some of our more astute readers may be wondering how we get out to the Terrace. Good question. But, weren't you wondering where those stairs in the Living Room led to? Let's refresh your memories:
Yes, we have to climb a half-flight of stairs and walk through our window to get to our terrace. It seemed a bit odd at first, but it gives the place extra character. Our apartment is the only one in the building that is half above and half below ground. So anyway, once you make it out to the Terrace, you can either sit in the chairs, or follow this:
At one point in time, the owner of the apartment must've had a better relationship with whoever lives behind the Gate, but now, it is sealed shut. Preliminary investigations have led us to believe that there is a hedge maze on the other side, but we don't talk too much about that, as connotations of Stephen King's 'The Shining' come to mind. Other tidbits regarding this place are that the last tenant was Fernandez Cavalcanti, who played for everyone's favorite soccer team, 1. FC Cologne! Granted, he only played six games for them, but hey, from one celebrity to another (see prior entry...'International Movie Stars'). The funny thing is, another guy from JCI was told the last tenant in his house in Japan was rented by '...some national soccer star' as well. But that was Japan, so using 'national' and 'soccer' and 'star' in the same sentence is pushing it a bit to begin with. Maybe that's the standard line all ex-pats get so they think their apartment is better than it is...
So, here concludes the tour of Casa De Petre (or, since we're in Germany, Petreplatz). Please wait until the tram has stopped completely before exiting...
