Cold Days and Warm Coats
Entry 10 of 61 | show all | print this entry |
The weather here in Germany is SO very strange. We thought Michigan weather was unpredictable...well it seems to be even worse here! At least in Michigan, the weather changes on a daily basis. Here it seems to change on an hourly basis. One minute the sun will be shining and you'll see blue sky and then twenty minutes later it will be pouring rain. Then the rain will stop, the streets will dry, and the wind will pick up. It will get extremely windy and cold and then an hour later it will rain again. It rains off and on ALL day long. This is why everyone carries an umbrella and almost everyone wears a warm coat...because you never know when it will rain or when the temperature will suddenly drop 10 degrees.
Knowing that the climate here is almost always cold, I stocked up warm coats before we left. I got most of them at the thrift shop (and it's a good thing because the cheapest coat I've seen here is $200EU). Anyway, I couldn't wear a coat on the plane because of SwissAir's strict carryon restrictions so I figured I would just retrieve one from one of our boxes when I got here. Little did I know that we wouldn't have access to our boxes for awhile. Well, I've been here for a week now and I still don't have a coat so I've been wearing nothing but sweaters everywhere. I have a sleeveless vest which helps, but as soon as the temperature drops and the wind picks up, it is so bitter cold that it's like wearing nothing at all.
Everyday when I walk down the streets and see everyone else wearing warm coats I think to myself..."I'm never flying SwissAir again!" But in spite of the fact that it has been bitter cold since I got here, I'm trying to make the best of things and be thankful for what I've got. I may not have a coat but I do have 3 warm sweaters. Of course they don't smell that great because I've been wearing the same ones for 7 days now, but it's still more than what a lot of people have. When I look at it that way...things don't seem so bad. It's amazing how much we take for granted until we find ourselves without. I've actually surprised myself by the fact that I've survived this long without one. I suppose anything is possible if you're able to keep things in the right perspective...
