First Impressions of Cologne
Entry 3 of 61 | show all | print this entry |
This morning we took the train from Dusseldorf to Cologne. What an awesome experience that was! It was the first time that I have ever been on a train and it was the coolest thing. For 9.20EU, both of us could take the train and not have to worry about traffic or anything. You just pick where you want to go, get on the train, and go. It's so cool! While we were on the train, we sat next to some very interesting people. Their were 8 German women sitting in front of us who appeared to be going shopping in Cologne. The all had expensive jewerly and leather coats on and they were all drinking vodka. They were probably in their early 40's and they were talking German a mile a minute and laughing like crazy. I was having so much fun listening to them and watching their faces get redder and redder the more they drank!
We stood on the train for most of the 30 minute ride because there weren't any open seats (which was fine) but toward the end of the trip, a German man let me have the seat next to him. I thanked him "Danka" and as soon as I sat down, he took one of his headphone pieces out of his ear and put it in mine. At first I didn't know what to do or what to say. I thought, "What the hell is this guy doing? I don't even know him and why is he shoving this thing in my ear?" I looked at Steve and he said, "He wants to share his music with you". So I turned back toward the guy and listened to music with him for 5 minutes. Only in different country would that ever happen. People in the U.S. barely share smokes with you let alone share headphones they just took out of their ears! Crazy!
But it gets even better...the 8 German women who were drinking vodka, were sipping out of sample bottles One of the ladies had bad full that must have had at least 50 of them in it. Anyway, toward the end of the trip, she started handing them out to everyone including me and Steve. We all toasted like we were friends...and we never met before! That is just one example of how different things are here. It is a completely different world...filled with completely different people. And I have a feeling that I haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg yet!
