I know, I know, I've been to Mississippi already back at the start of my 50/50 in Yazoo City.  When I was in North Carolina, the office manager of the Mt. Airy Habitat affiliate, Sheree Russo told me about a conference for leadership training of volunteers that was being sponsored by Habitat International..  It peeked my interest and when I contacted the man in charge, Russ Griffith told me that he had one opening left and he signed me up.  I was especially excited that our host would be the Bay-Waveland affiliate which is run by Wendy McDonald (ED) and the excellent construction staff is led by Mark Scott.  Bart and I had worked with Mark to help "blitz build" two of the ten houses during the Jimmy Carter Work Project in 2008 here.  This affilate, which only began in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, has been named Affiliate of the Year by Habitat International for the last two years. They built 12 homes the first year, 39 the second, and have averaged 40 houses per year since that time.   This week the attendees of the conference and another group of volunteers will be working on houses #165 and #166.  They are building Leeds silver certified homes which are super-insulated for this hot and humid climate and are also hurricane resistant.  The Executive Director, Wendy McDonald does an excellent job of chasing the money, and uses creative ways of bundling grants and donations to keep ahead of Mark's voracious appetite for construction materials for all of these houses.
