The October Mexico cruise on Oosterdam gave us a feel for Holland America - not worth exploring again. The thought of flying in and out of San Juan was a deal-breaker.
The cruise was not selling out - and Rich announcement that the 2012 Allure was the LAST of its kind. Rich said - honestly - that he couldn't fill such a ship - and so he would not renew the contract in 2013.
We decided we WANTED to see what was improved and what wasn't. We wanted a chance to re-cast our memories. We wanted to be on that ship again. And since this was the final year - this was our only chance.
So now the only remaining challenge - get a DEAL!
This seemed do-able - since there was excess inventory and an inevitable set of cancellations. So once again we played the watch and pounce game. There was an ensuing flurry of activity.
On Dec 26th - we responded to a posting for a room - but we were too late.
On Dec 27th - Atlantis announced that Idina Menzel would be the headliner. AND they announced a 50% off for friends - so anyone who was already booked could buy another room for a friend at half price. Too bad it was too late to make friends.
On Jan 2nd a posting went up looking to sell a Junior Suite - a couple from Pennsylvania (Drew and Anthony) who had to cancel. We offered a 75% payment (which would put it at the same pricing as the 50% off for a friend deal) and they countered with a 82% which we agreed to. It came out to be about the same price as the standard balcony room in 2011 - but this was a suite with a walk-in closet (leave it to RCCL to think we need a walk-in closet).
It took 4 days to get the logistics worked out - and eventually we had to pay the full price and then receive a check from Anthony.
So on January 6th we were books for Junior Suite 6648 - paid in full!!
