This story really begins where the 2011 Allure Cruise left off.  As we all settled back into our daily lives, the buzz of the 2011 cruise lingered - like a dirty and endless fog.

The Alumni board posts were endless. And it was hard to ignore two vital aspects of the ensuing bitchfest: (1) some of the points were valid complaints and (2) even the invalid ones had so much support that it was clear that no one wanted to be around this negativity. Surely not us.

The biggest complaints from the groups were:
  • The Solarium parties - the space just didn't seem to work for anyone
  • The food - OMG did they bitch about the food
  • The drug busts and "Alpha, Alpha, Alpha" calls
The smaller complaints were about:
  • The entertainment - that they had never heard of
  • The party themes were too vague to set a clear costume direction
  • The coasters instead of duffel bags
The whole thing left us very conflicted.  Overall the trip had been one of the most memorable of our lives - with some of the most perfect moments (the Dog Tag T-Dance will live as one of the most joyous times).  But it was also becoming filled with disappointment - if not our own, certainly enough of those around us.

As the negativity came flooding in, it began to recast the whole cruise as not being the Atlantis we love. But more because of the collective "ugliness" as opposed to something that was tangible.  It was hard to find any real reason - except for one critical item: "Once in a lifetime".

The cruise had been so built up - that it was impossible for it to live up to the pedestal it was on.

Case in point - at one point on the cruise someone started a rumor that Cher was appearing as a special guest.  To be real - that was NEVER going to happen.  And even as people spread the rumor - they KNEW it wasn't true.  But even so - when Cher did NOT appear on stage (and instead the amazing Cheyenne Jackson performed) - everyone was let down.  It wasn't a great performance - it was simply "less-than-Cher".

Everyone's imagination had run away with them - and when the fantasy didn't come true - the cruise was "less-than".
