In 2009 it was Hurricane Rick that was headed toward the Mexican Riviera - along with us. We ended up spending 3 days with Rick, creating a memorably unique cruise experience. I don't regret having been through it, but I wish it had never happened.
This time, the West Coast was free of all weather warnings. However, the East Coast was the exact opposite.
Super-storm Sandy was forming around the Bahamas and was heading toward the NY metro area. Reports called this a perfect storm that was like no other. Typically, as tropical storms move north, they are pushed out to sea by the jet stream. But a high reassure front over Nova Scotia was causing a rare occurrence whereby the jet stream was running east-to-west and was threatening to push Sandy into NJ.
Initial "possible projections" were predicting things might be bad. But each day brought more certainty and on Friday, it was announced that the Subway would be shutting down on Sunday and NJ Transit was closing by Monday.
It was hard to tell what was over-reacting and what was warranted, but so long as we had a flight out on Saturday, we truly didn't care. We were going to leave town and it wasn't our problem.
Come what may ...
