We decided to do a day trip from Lucca to Florence. It's easy enough to get the bus there and it only took a bit over an hour, with a majority of that time spent in traffic in Florence I think. We had both been to Florence before but thought it would be cool to check out the sights for a few hours and fight off some pickpockets on the Ponte Vecchio.
It was pretty hot there - about 35 degrees at 11:30am and jammed with tourists! Walked down past the Duomo and through to the square near the Uffizi with the fake David and then across the Ponte Vecchio. We walked up the hill on the other side and ended up going into some really amazing gardens that had a great view back over Florence (but at a cost of 10 euros each....) Still it was nice in there and a lot cooler than elsewhere in the city.
We missed a bus back to Lucca by about 2 minutes and it was an hour wait for the next direct bus or a 20 minute wait for the next non-direct bus. How non-direct can a bus be? The answer is very. On the upside we saw almost every small town between Florence and Lucca.
