So somewhere between Siena and Lucca summer arrived. Not that we had bad weather before but all of a sudden it got hot and we like very much (well maybe I like more than Pete....)
Lucca = Lovely. Arrived mid afternoon on the Wednesday to our bed & breakfast just outside the city walls. No one to great us so we let ourselves in with the keys that were waiting for us in the letter box. It was a great place to stay with some very interesting art work painted on the walls in the room. I think they were going for a medieval theme throughout the house which seemed to mean more exposed breasts painted on the walls than necessary. Moving on.... we only went to the 'breakfast' component of our bed & breakfast on one morning when we were greeted with the biggest starer I have ever met. She just wouldn't quit.
Lucca is surrounded by city walls that are still intact and actually have a road on the top of them. Quite amazing (I seem to say that a lot...) After our Tour de France experience we had pedal power withdrawal so we hired bikes for an hour and did two laps of the city walls with the Nonnas. I wanted to have a race around the walls but then we decided it's a bit early in the trip for potential injuries and hospital visits.
There were a few great vantage points to get a view out over the city including one tower that actually has trees growing on the top of it. We had some quite good pizza in Lucca including Pete choosing to eat a pizza called the Sicilian which was essentially a margherita with as much garlic as they could find. I had to keep my distance for about a day.
We did a day trip to Florence from Lucca as well - refer separate entry.
Next stop: Levanto - on the coast so just in time for summer.
