 Elsey National Park

Whilst planning our trip we had considered whether to go as far south Tennant Creek or Alice Springs.  To help us decided we estimated how long we needed to get to Perth and then allow ourselves 7 days to 'play' with so that we were not rushing to move on when we would choose to linger a while longer.  Therefore, we ruled out Tennant Creek and Alice Springs and decided to only go as far south as the Elsey National Park, after Kakadu we drove to Mataranka.   We camped at 12 mile Yard Campsite, showers, toilets and water. As with most of the sites we stayed on, the rangers or camp hosts were friendly and most helpful with local information.  They were happy to pass the time of day chatting.   We made the 8km walk along the riverside setting out at 7.30 a.m.  There were area’s to swim but quite difficult to get into the water off the soft river bank.

The temperatures were very high, hence the obsession with swimming, to cool down. It was a very pretty and tranquil area.  During the 4 hrs we were out we only saw one other couple walking.  We found this to be quite normal on our trip so far. We took a different shorter walk at 4 p.m. and did swim off the rocks in the river.

We were lucky enough to have a Bower Bird nesting next to our Campervan.  (Although I'm sure he felt that we had camped next to his nest!!!!)
