9th - 14th September, 2007.

The cold was getting to us so we made the big call to head south to Spain for some warmth and sunshine. We set out from Konigssee and within half an hour we were stuck in a traffic jam...for 2 hours. When we cleared that obstacle we turned south into Austria - took a wrong turn at Innsbruck and almost ended up in Italy. We drove on through Liechtenstein and Switzerland and down into France, finally ending up three days later on the Costa Brava coastline north of Barcelona. That's six countries in three days... A new record!!!

We based ourselves in Calella de Palafrugell, a coastal resort town about 2hrs north of Barcelona, another of Shane and Kate's recommendations. We arrived around 3 pm and found very little open, welcome back to Spain and the afternoon siesta. We hadn't organised any accommodation so had to wait for the Tourism office to open at five. We walked around killing time, and enjoyed an ice cream overlooking the beach. At five there was no sign of anyone, and by ten past we were getting worried. That's when I noticed the small sign on the door saying it was bank holiday and it wasn't opening again at all. Our accommodation options just reduced by 95%. We ended up in a really expensive resort in a triple room that was tiny. Three beds side by side and not much room for anything else. The rest of the resort was pretty flash, tennis court, lap pool, tropical gardens and a restaurant with a great breakfast. A shame we couldn't stay longer.

When the tourism office opened the next day we found a two bedroom apartment with kitchen, lounge room, and a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, for half the price of our peas in a pod hotel room the previous night.

We wasted little time and headed straight for the beach directly below our pad. It was good to be swimming and lying in the sun again. Air temp 28 and water temp 25. It's hard to believe we were in Germany a few days ago and it was five degrees with snow just above us.

We decided against staying in Barcelona and just drive in for a daytrip instead. A lot of people have raved about Barcelona so we had high expectations but we unanimously were disappointed. Markets were good, so was the tapas, but the traffic was full on and as for all of the mozzies (mopeds or vespas) with their non existent mufflers. How can something so small and slow create so much noise. We haven't given up on Barcelona yet, we will return and spend much longer than a day. It's not like a Venice or Florence, you have to dig a bit deeper, but with our beautiful seaside oasis just up the coast it would have to wait for another trip.

We spent another lazy day at C de P. reading, swimming and walking along the coastal path that hugs the hillside. We ate most nights at a small cliff top restaurant (so much for the kitchen in our room) and enjoyed pizza, pasta, seafood and salads overlooking the beach and hundreds of boats moored just offshore... we are eating well!
