26th - 29th August 2007.

Crossing the border into Slovenia went from a run of the mill border crossing into a fiasco within seconds. "Turn it off, now" said the border official. I turned to see Mandy holding the video camera recording our crossing. Uh Oh! We had been videoing the countryside when all of a sudden the border gates loomed around a corner. We shot a bit of video of me holding the passports as we approached the border but I thought Mandy would have put the camera down as we actually crossed. Nope, she kept on filming right up to the booth and the official was not happy.

He took our passports, got up from his chair and walked around the car to Mandy's side and tapped on the window. Oh great, now he's going to confiscate the tape with all our footage of our anniversary and other parts of Croatia.

He made Mandy rewind the tape and record over all the footage of the border. This took a couple of goes as she didn't record long enough so had to rewind and do it again. By this stage Mandy's hands were shaking like a leaf. The guard stood by her window (with a gun on his belt) looking as mean as possible while more and more cars backed up behind us, but at least he let us keep the tape.

On the way to Lake Bled, our next destination, the entire highway was closed in front of us for no apparent reason. Cars banked up behind a police roadblock and then we waited. About ten minutes later a helicopter flew low overhead followed by three police bikes escorting four luxury sedans then three more bikes all doing at least 150 km/h in the opposite direction, then the roadblock was removed and we were allowed to continue on our way.

As it was Sunday Lake Bled was packed with holidaymakers and day trippers. The campground on the lake was crazy so we decided to stay in the ground just out of town. There we found our quietest campground since Portugal back in June. August is thankfully coming to a close and the masses are heading home. In fact this weekend seems to be the end as our campground had people leaving all afternoon and by dark was only 20% full.

We did all the touristy stuff on and around Lake Bled. We visited the castle on the hill. We swam in the lake. We went to the Vitgar Gorge which was our highlight. A 1.6 kilometre walkway follows the path of the river as it funnels its way through this narrow gorge.

We also hired a rowboat. I've never rowed a boat before but I thought I should be OK at this, it looks pretty easy. For the first five minutes I was the biggest kook rower in the world. I was so uncoordinated at it and then this pommy show off rowed straight past me just to rub salt into the wounds. All Mandy could do was laugh at me and video me getting angry. So I stopped........ I relaxed, and then tried again, and what do you know, I started slowly, took my time and got some sort of rhythm going, and hey I'm rowing! Wooohooo I can do it. I started pulling on those oars with everything I had and started to catch the pommy poser. I had him worried too as I'm sure he lifted his stroke rate (that's what us rowers call it) to try and match my speed and if the island was another 30 metres further out in the middle of Lake Bled I would have had him. Your mine on the way back pom!!!

The island is home to a small church and a restaurant and a path that follows the shore. There were some good size fish hanging around but we didn't bring our rods. The rematch didn't take place as the pom was running scared and left early so Mandy had a crack at rowing and was pretty good at it straight away. She wasn't all that good at moving around the boat as you can see from the fifth photo above, she managed to get from the camera to this position in 9.8 seconds leaving just .2 of a second to smile before the timer took the photo. Funny stuff.

What happened to the guy who's Viagra got caught on his throat? He woke up with a stiff neck. I didn't have any Viagra but woke up on Thursday with gammy neck too and have had to move my entire body to look over my shoulder ever since. Stupid neck. Hopefully won't last too long.

That's all from Slovenia. We stayed in Croatia longer than we expected so little Slovenia only gets 4 days. We are heading towards Vienna - Austria, to pick a very special guest travelling partner who will be with us for a month.

More soon...
