Trip over to the east - Phonsavanh, and the Plain of Jars. The town is based on a plain on top of the mountains so a bit cooler. Very very winding roads to get here. A large new town 80k people - looked like a large truck stop. Stayed Banna Plain of Jars House - v nice.

There are actually over 60 site with these jars on but only 3 are open to the public because of UXO (unexploded ordinance from the Indochina war and the fact that America dropped off its unwanted cluster bombs over Laos).

The jars are very strange - up on top of hills made of sandstone the nearest supply of which is 300 km away but even that doesn't match exactly! They are from 2000BC and no one knows what they are - perhaps for burials.

Had to walk between white markers because only some of the area had been cleared of explosives - you could still see craters from where bombs had exploded and trenches where the Vietnamese had hidden.

In Laos official guide book it says that 'another gift from the Americans' was the defoliant that wiped out all of the vegetation on the surrounding hills.
