Flag of New Zealand  , South Island,
Saturday, December 31, 2011

Summer has returned, so we set off this morning with a spring in our step and a smile on our face. Travelled west towards a town called Westport and the start of our journey right down the west coast of the South Island.

The road from Murchison to Westport follows the Buller Gorge and our decision to wait for the tropical storm to pass was justified by the scenery as we travelled through the Gorge, where the water was spectacularly raging down towards the sea, and more so than usual because of all the recent rain.

We have been told that as we travel down the west side the mountains, lakes, glaziers and coastal ruggedness that we will encounter will be amazing - today was pretty good and it only gets better!

Shortly after we first arrived in New Zealand a local said to us: "The North Island is pretty but the South Island is stunning" and we are beginning to understand where he was coming from.

Another New Zealand quote that made us think - 'How true' - was: "Life is not about the breaths you take, it's about what takes your breath away"

I've just read what I have written and decided I better stop now before I either burst into song or start quoting poetry!!!

110 Kms travelled today.
