I had clearance to go ashore by 17:30. Given the time needed to get out of the port, this was of course just too late for seeing museums, shopping, and so on. (By that time, also, Nadja had an offer of a lift to the station, which she decided to make a ticket-buying trip and leave tomorrow.) So I shot off to the internet cafe, along with the Chief Engineer. After rushing out a couple of weeks blog entries and scanning my email, I spent an hour or two wandering around La Spezia.

It was pleasant enough, but mostly closed and I didn't find an interesting old town - I'm sure it's there somewhere. I got lost, wandered a bit more until I got un-lost and decided to eat where I could subsequently find my way back to the ship. The meal was fine, the waiter was careful to make sure I knew what I was getting (we talked mainly in German) and he had a fine line in thumb-dancing as he walked to and from the only other occupied table at the far end of the place. I was back aboard about 22:30. I saw no more of Nadja.
