Thames

In the morning, I did some pre-embarkation shopping in Tauranaga, and wasted an hour with an internet cafe that didn't quite work. I then headed up the coast, visiting Katikati, Waihi Beach and Whagamata (and coastline in between) before heading west across the Coromandel Peninsula. This proved very hilly and gave a few good views of rocky peaks above the forest.

I arrived in Thames late afternoon, to call on Keith Robinson - an erstwhile colleague with a house there. We spent several hours chatting, which was a rarity for me after the last few weeks, and did a walk to a view point in the Kauaeranga Valley.

We also braved the local Indian restaurant. Keith has a large house there, and offered a bedroom but I camped on his drive, enjoying the luxury of a real bathroom for a change.
