Time to head towads Fraser Island - Worlds greatest sand island - We had high hopes for this place. But before that Oona and I had a chance to take a surfing lesson from a local surfing guru called Phil. We needed to be on the beach at 7.00... when we came Phil had just come back from his own surfing. Seems that the locals wake up really early in the morning in order to catch the best waves and enjoy their time before work and the tourists that comes.
We had really good waves and Phil went through the basics, and both of us managed to get up on the board within the first 5 attemts. Obvisously it went much better for Oona, young and fit, so she surfed like an "pro", Phil's comment, "hey, mate, she's a natural". However, for good ol' daddy had more struggle with the balancing of the board.
Anyway it was great fun, and Phil was very generous, so we got extended lessons and were suddenly in a hurry in order to catch the ferry to Fraser. The trip to Hervey Bay went as planned, but again we could not find the office, false address on our rental papers made us dri ve around searching at the wrong place. We lost valuable minutes, with only 30min left we called Hertz and asked directions. We were 15min drive from our target!!! Now we are in a hurry.... arriving at Hertz with only 10min, the rental guy met us, jumped in an drove us to the ferry. That's customer service!!
We made the ferry checkin 2min prior ferry departure. Ferry headed out for Fraser and then suddenly one of ferry's engine broke down, forced us to return an catch an other boat.
King Fisher Bay resort suprised us a bit, it did not have that luxury that we expected, instead it was quite normal standard, plain, simple and functional. This by purpose, it has received many awards to be the Australias top hotel, regarding eco tourism, so the idea is to mate with the nature, and that I promise you, you will. The hotel rooms are located, among the tree tops, "it feel like you would live in a tree". Bird, friendly spiders and lizards makes you company while you search for your room. Frogs barking all night long to remind you about the wilderness outside.
