Most people we spoke to had told us not to hang around long in jberg and leave as soon as possible. Mainly due to the high crime rates and also there was not too much to do there really.
With this in mind we had pre booked our first hostel called Mbizi and had a print out with the address on it... as soon as we had collected our bags we were bombarded with people asking us where we were going, if we wanted a taxi etc.. it was quite overwelming really so we decided to pick the guy who looked the least dodgy and showed him the paper with the address on to see if he kow where and how much it was to take us there. He told us it would be about 550 Rand which is about 50 pounds.
During our taxi ride I asked the guy several times if he knew where it was and he kept on saying he did..... and guess what... he didnt....
He dropped us off at a place called the Ritz Backpackers that was about 20 miles away from where we should have gone...... before we had chance to realise he was gone... Welcome to South Africa...
The staff at the Ritz were really nice and even gave us a free lift back to the airport and rang out real hostel to arrange them to collect us....
We stayed in Joberg for 2 nights and didnt venture out much. We were travelling S. Africa on the 'Baz Bus' that we had pre paid for back home. This was a sort of minibus service that picked you up and dropped you off from the hostels so it was by far the most convenient and safest way to travel.
