Where I stayed

Once again, following the tradition of sleeping late just before out trips (usually because we celebrate our departure but this time only for the trip preparations - short though it may be, it is a formal occassion so...) and of course taking the most early flight possible, we reached Brussels' International Airport at about 11.00am, feeling (and possibly) looking like crap from lack of sleep.

Tom's (the groom) parents well kind enough to pick us up from the airport so in about 20', all 3 of us found ourselves in the beautiful surroundings of Mechelen! We all fell in love with the place instantly and starting to forget all about our sleepiness. Tom met us at the hotel (by the way, if you're ever in Mechelen, Hotel Ve is a very nice place to stay. Not really on the cheap side but very stylish, modern/minimal and brand new as it has opened last year. They do seem to be pretty fresh in this business judging from the small things, but they look so eager to get better and accomodate all possible needs - smokers: chose something else as smoking is only allowed outside the big door of the hotel!). So, Tom took us out to coffee and a small tour of Mechelen and left us on our own to discover the rest. And so we did!

Mechelen's Cathedral has the most amazing tower ever!! Honestly, it is so huge that makes your jaw drop to your feet! Looks like it probably fell off some UFO or something, totally out of this world!! Just as a measure of scale, it has 500steps and imagine that it is incomplete, apparently they run out money and the tower is now the most well known incomplete landmark!!!! Naturally Mechelen has a perfectly picturesque square that roads with endless shops of all sorts start. So many people enjoying the -freezing but still - sunny day, people of all ages, relaxed and smiling... I thought I was in some fairy tale or something...

There is also a river going through the town but that is something to talk about tomorrow as we are going on a boat ride.

After looking around at the beautiful decorated streets - decorated for no apparent reason - bought our souvenirs (mainly chocolates in all forms and shapes)we headed back to the hotel as we were meeting everybody for dinner and drinks before the happy couple's big day!!

By the way, the Boudouir, excellent tapas bar, great atmosphere AND there is also a place where you can have a smoke without having to freeze your ass on the cold Mechelen pavements, as smoking is not allowed anywhere...
