From the Douro region we drove straight down to the Algarve and the cliffs and beaches of southern Portugal at Lagos. The beaches are amazing, we took a boat ride through the grottos and got our asses kicked by some huge waves. The water is an amazing aqua and green color...
After two days in Lagos we drove through Portugal and into Spain, through Cadiz and down the coast to Tarifa, which was an unexpected stop but turned out to be one of our favorite spots. It's a long stretch of windy beach that is the windsurfing capital of Europe...and Africa lies on the other side of the water. We spent two days in Tarifa, one of which I took a side trip to Tangier, Morocco which words can't describe, but maybe pictures will do better.
From Tarifa we headed for Gibraltar, and climbed the rock which gives you views of Spain and the head of Africa. We toured the cave system within the rock and got harassed by the monkeys that run rampant there...
From Gibraltar we went to the Costa del Sol, through Malaga and stayed in a smaller quiet town just outside the border.
The next day it was Malaga to Seville, which was so traffic congested we decided to go back to Lagos for more time at the beach! Tonight we're in Lisbon before departing for Athens tomorrow morning. We've only got a week left, so we'll see you all soon!
