A pretty non-eventful flight but then when we land and I am getting my bag from the overhead locker, I put my wallet in my left hand trenchcoat pocket and papers and passport in my right hand pocket. A women behind me keeps knocking into me, I think she's just anxious to leave the plane and get going... but in hindsight I think its much more sinister..
Taking my travel-on luggage to Passport control, I start filling out my arrivals card and need to get my Flight number when I realise that my wallet is not there!
Holymotherofcrap I've had my wallet stolen (or alternatively unlikely it has fallen out of my coat) Now its my cash, credit card, debit card, drivers licence, oyster card and return Stanstead Express ticket. So I literally have no way of getting from the airport back to London and my suitcase and spare Visa card.
The lady at passport control is fantastic and escorts me through to the front of the queue so I can get to the Ryan Air counter in case it was handed in or dumped.
When I get to the counter I am told there is nothing they can do for 24 hours as the planes are turned around so quickly that whatever is found goes in the plane safe and onto the next destination it is only handed in to the Lost and Found Company when it returns to London. I am faced with the choice of sleeping the night at the airport or trying to work out how to get back to London.
I wait around for about 2 hours waiting for phone calls back from Ryan Air and the Lost and Found Department. I call my Travel Insurance Company who are absolutely hopeless saying they are unable to do anything and that they don't cover for much and don't offer emergency money. I text Peter and he offers to drive down and pick me up (what a sweetheart) I can't get hold of Nick his phone is turned off and the Ryan Air girl suggests I go to the Stanstead Express and they may be able to re-issue my ticket.
When I get downstair, with no credit card number to prove I have a ticket the man at the counter is totally unhelpful, saying he can't re-issue it, he can't take a credit card number over the phone and he can't allow me to travel for free... Im like what am I supposed to do? I have paid for an purchased a freaking ticket I just have had it stolen!! Am I supposed to stand to the side and beg for change to get a new ticket to get me back to London. He says can't someone pick me up, Im like Nooo its a bloody long way from Australia and then proceed to burst into tears... with a large line growing behind me he suggests I go talk to the station master, and points me down the platform.
When I get there a old gentlmen asks if I am ok and tired, emotional I again burst into tears and explain my situation, he offers me a cup of tea and to sit in the office and then they work out who is working the train and arranges for me to be escorted by Steven who will walk me through the gates at the other end.
After I arrive back I spend the next few hours trying to organise cancellation of my cards and a new credit card, least I have only one that reaches its limit or gets lost/stolen. Didn't realise how much more difficult it is to do when you are overseas. (Writing this on Monday 5 days later, and I am still waiting for my replacement card to arrive).
