After saying Au revoir to Mel, yes I am practicing my french already and a two hour snooze I get ready to take on Singapore.  Mel's map is handy and the transport system is easy peasy.  I decide to do some shopping and head to Boon Lay a shopping centre one stop from Mel's house. At the station I can't resist buying some "Kickapoo Joy Juice" a local drink which I have no idea what Joy Juice is supposed to taste like.  But it tastes a bit like lemonade and a bit like nothing I have ever tasted before! And I dare not ask where they get Joy Juice from!

Swiping my card and Im on a train in less than 5 minutes from leaving Mel's house.  On the train there are two girls who are all dressed up and gorgeous looking.  Like a typical tourist I ask if I can take a picture and they say yes and we take some pictures when we alight.  They also have their friends take some pictures of me and them together.  I ask them why they are dressed up and they have just been to a photo shoot and they are 'Lolita' I ask them if it is like Shubuya in Japan they say kind of but their own style.  This is also my first encounter with "Singlish" and thanks to Wiki a concise definition is - The vocabulary of Singlish consists of words originating from English, Malay (mainly Bahasa Melayu rather than Indonesian), Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Tamil and to a lesser extent various other European, Indic and Sinitic languages, while Singlish syntax resembles southern varieties of Chinese. Also, elements of American and Australian slang have come through from imported television series. To date, other Asian languages like Japanese, Korean and other lesser known Chinese dialects such as Shanghainese have also been incorporated into Singlish.   An example that Mel gave me is they also shorten things so for instance instead of saying "Do you want to come shopping with me?" they will say Come Shop.

I do some shopping and have sushi for lunch and a mango juice, the one thing I find very confusing is the fact that all the meals are hot when it is so hot itself, finding something cool to eat was quite difficult.  An interesting eaterie I came across was "PIG ORGAN SOUP" Mmmmm hmmm enticing not, it had such delicacies as pigs hooves, pig kidney soup, pig organ soup of course and get this Pig Ball Soup (again better not to ask!).

After shopping I head back to Mel's have a shower and get ready to meet Leon back in town to go to the Night Safari.  Mel being the organiser she is arranged for Leon, her personal to drive me and take me to the Night Safari one of Singpores most famous attractions.  I go to Raffles MTR and get a call from Mel that Leon hasn't heard from me.  My text mustn't have worked, she says to look for a tall asian guy!  Hmmm well there's just a few Asians here so after asking 3 if they are Leon I decide to sit and wait.  He arrives and he is shy and very well mannered (Like most Singaporeans) and then we go to get his car.  He has worked all day as a Personal Trainer and bought his car in to drive me as its far easier than public transport.  Its a sporty little number and when I get inside and see the dials and the lights on the floor I ask him if he is a fan of 2Fast2Furious.  Yes he is!  He has the lights under his car and its not until 30 mins into the drive home I see him use his indicators, in fact I wasn't sure if the car even had any!  Its an interesting ride and we chat the whole way there.  The Night Safari Zoo is amazing, like nothing else I've seen before.  We decide to see the Animal show first which is a site to behold.  Wolves, Otters, Serval's,  Bingtangs,  Owls, Pythons and a whole feast of other animals including a gorgeous Puma who runs up a tree and then jumps down onto a rock formation.  Leon is almost as enthusiastic as I am.  We then have dinner me dumplings, he chicken rice.  We then take the tram around the zoo seeing heaps of different animals up close and personal.  We do some of the walks and arrive at the most opportune time to see lions roaring and cheetahs showing off.  Unfortunately you can't take pictures with flashes and my tripod and camera doesn't really pick up on the animals so a few black photos.

At 11.45pm we get ushered out of the zoo as it closes at midnight, it was an amazing night.  We then movie style drive back to Mel's getting lost on numerous times. Half way home Leon asks if I have my passport with me.  I say no and ask why.  He's like we can drive to Malaysia.  Crazy! although for a split second I did think about it!  Even though there's not too many photos I have memories to last.  I get back to Mel's at bout 1.30am and head to sleep at 2am which is about 5am Melbourne time.

Wish you were here - Penny
