After I had had some breakfast and read my mails, I returned to the hostel to get back on to the bus, but the bus had broken down and we had to wait for a while. we finally left at about 11am and headed towards the Tongariro National Park.
For all of you Lord of the rings fans Mt Ruapehu was Mt Doom in the film.
Mt Ruapehu is a very active volcano and last erupted properly in 1995 and the following year, it coughed and spluttered a little and sent ash clouds high into the sky. the other two active volcanoes in the national park are Mt
We stayed at the Scotel Alpine Resort, which is situated in Whakapapa village. I have to explain that this is the funniest named village I have come accross-ever! and heres why - In Maori WH together are pronounced as a soft "F" in English, so Whakapapa is said as " fuck-a-papa" still makes me giggle.
Scotel is a lovely place a bit like a large log cabin and they have great beds, the best I have slept in so far.
I spent the whole time just chilling out in my bed with a good book and so music on my headphones.
When I woke up in the morning it was snowing, which really threw me because when we left Taupo is was sunny and now I had snow to deal with-maddness.
The National park and surrounding area are so spectacular and ruggedly beautiful, it really is an amazing place and hopefully when I return I will be able to walk the crossing.
