"Thank Allah! That I cannot hear the sounds of chaos" say some Deaf Palestinians. Sounds of people shouting or screaming, sounds of demonstrations and protests are hardly heard or understood by many Deaf Palestinians.

However Deaf life in an occupied territory with military in force is hardly documented to the public because of communication and language differences between the Deaf people and international media. What do we really know about Deaf Life in under such occupied territory with military tension?

The real life story of Deaf Palestinians living in the occupied territories in Gaza and the West Bank face discriminating dangers, such as missing a loud public warning and even gun shots or explosions that may be happening in their area or near by.

More fearful will be a military halt unheard and then following reactions misunderstood. A number of Deaf Palestinians have been shot for not hearing a military or even police's command or halt. So far I was able to collect two deaths records of Deaf Palestines shot due communication misunderstanding. One record was very recent, July 2005 in Nablus.

The government of Israel has decided to distribute special blue plastic cover cards with the international "Deaf" mark, which is the ear with a slash across it like the no smoking sign.

Those who have the card say they hope that it will guarantee their safety when soldiers or police approach them but in reality not all deaf people know about the card says a president of a Deaf club in West Bank.

Good for YOU
How wonderful for you and your journey. It took me 30 years to work up the courage to go to Palestine.
