The real thing was to get up before dawn and hike up again the 400m to the lake to see sunrise on the Fitzroy. Finally when I set up my alarm clock, I had decided that I would watch the sunrise from the river under the camping ground, and then maybe climb up there if the weather was good.
It was coooold in the morning, Robert had left to hike up to the viewpoint on the lake de los tres. I was with Lionel and Milva, and many other campers who were setting up their photography material. We walked a bit along the river so as to be away from the crowd.
There were clouds around the Fitzroy, and there were other clouds to the east behind us, blocking the sunrays. We still had a bit of an orange sunrise on the peaks, or on the glaciers, but it was nothing espectacular, especially since there were so many people watching the same thing... so it seems that next time I will get up to go up before daylight and be at a remote viewpoint for dawn: the experience is just completely different.
Lionel went up there shortly after, I prefered to wait a bit to see how the clouds would behave. Finally I managed to convince Milva to go back up there. That was not a really enjoyable prospect, as a steep walk up 400m is not the first thing you want to do in he morning usually (especially when you know that directly afterwards you will go down the same way). We met Robert who was on his way down, he had had the sunrise for himself alone up there...
Once up there the prize was worth the price: views on the glacier, on the lago Sucia, laguna de los Tres, and the mountains to the east, the lakes in the valley, and huge lagoViedma in the distance. We had been there the day before, so what made it so great? Nothing, everytime is great.
The wind was very strong, the clouds were hiding the top of Fitzroy. We could see the rain falling not too far away, those big black clouds coming towards us. So we went back down.
Robert had left, as he was in a hurry. We packed the tent, ate a sandwich, and went away too before the bad weather could catch up with us.
On the way down we had beautiful views of the valley, the rio was blue green, and there was lots of wind and sun.
The bad weather was just behind us all the time, and hit El Chalten just after we got "home", but not before a pit stop at the panaderia to fill up with pastries!
In the evening we devoured the bife de chorizo that we had been talking about for 3 days.
